US-China strategic competition over Taiwan · situation → rising, gradual pace
China patrols east of Taiwan as Taiwan cries harassment and debuts of drone carrier raise pressure
The United States and China compete for influence over Taiwan, which seeks to preserve its autonomy and economic stability. The rivalry plays out across the Taiwan Strait where military and coast guard incursions probe limits, in markets where selloffs can pressure Taiwan's currency and stocks, and in technology where chipmaking and rare-earth supply chains carry strategic weight.

China's east-coast patrols drew a fresh harassment accusation from Taiwan on Nov 1, while Beijing debuted a catapult drone carrier on Oct 30 and kept a large naval presence at sea. Allied foreign ministers in Atlanta on Oct 31 reaffirmed Strait peace and Taiwan thanked them Nov 1, as Taipei framed the contest as democracy versus centralization. Instruments as of Oct 31 showed no unusual Strait traffic, but the history is only 14-20 days, so a single day is not decisive.

Iran offers two-day Hormuz reopening as Khamenei orders unrestricted retaliation and tanker fires keep strait closed
The United States, Iran and the Iran-backed Houthis are contesting two shipping chokepoints — the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman and the Red Sea route past Yemen. Washington says its strikes aim to degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping and ensure freedom of navigation, while Tehran calls the strait a red line and says reopening depends on compliance with its regulations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed after four tankers were set ablaze on 30-31 Oct on what Iran calls unauthorized routes, with no new mine-clearance confirmation to contradict the closure. Diplomacy moved into a Qatari channel with Iran offering a two-day reopening plan tied to sweeping US concessions, while Iran's supreme leader ordered planning for an immediate, geographically unrestricted retaliation and Washington signaled one or two targets remain but no strike decision has been made.

- New: Khamenei ordered immediate, geographically unrestricted retaliation planning including all US-Israeli assets…
- New: UN demanded independent investigation into OHCHR staffer death in Houthi custody with seven other staff still held…
1 unchanged: Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed with no new UKMTO/JMIC mine-clearance confirmation; four-tanker fire picture from 31 Oct still stands and no new IMF PortWatch or Kpler flow recovery reported.

Oleshky evacuees reach Ukraine as Russian strikes kill dozens and refinery fires continue
Russia is fighting to keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence and to revise the European security order, while Ukraine is fighting to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity with support from European states and the United States. The United States acts as both weapons and technology provider and diplomatic mediator. The contest matters beyond the front line because long-range strikes can hit cities and infrastructure, fighting in the Black Sea can disrupt shipping and energy, and control of satellite communications can decide operations.

Oleshky's US-brokered local truce delivered hundreds to Ukrainian-controlled territory Oct 31 via a 19-hour Crimea-Belarus route, but it is set to expire at 23:00 Nov 1 with no extension announced. At the same time reciprocal long-range strikes intensified: Russian missiles and jet drones killed at least 27 across Ukraine Oct 29-30 and left 350,000 without power in Dnipro, while Ukrainian drones kept hitting Russian refineries including a reported fire at Kstovo overnight Nov 1. The US cleared a $2.1bn allied-funded sale of 500 Patriot interceptors Oct 30, but President Zelensky said deliveries may take years and asked for stockpiled missiles now.

Israel entrenches in south Lebanon as Hebron siege keeps 3,000 displaced and Gaza strikes continue despite ceasefire
The war in Gaza between Israel and Palestinian armed groups and violence in the occupied West Bank are linked. Fighting in Gaza has created a severe humanitarian crisis with repeated ceasefires, while in the West Bank Israeli settlers and security forces confront Palestinian residents, including during olive harvests. The cycle drives diplomatic fallout at the United Nations and among European governments that restrict imports of goods made in settlements, which are Israeli communities in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Golan Heights deemed unlawful under international law.

EU and Canada launch 'ever-closer association' after member states block associate-membership term
The European Union and Canada have been close economic and political partners for decades, anchored since 2016-2017 by the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement that removed most tariffs. Canada cannot join the EU because EU treaties limit membership to European states, so leaders have explored a bespoke partnership that is closer than a normal third-country tie but short of full membership.
