A colony is small enough to mail
The commodity is usually not a single worker. It is a founding colony: a queen with workers and developing brood, shipped in a test tube or an artificial enclosure called a formicarium. That compact reproductive unit can pass through ordinary shipping channels and be advertised through specialist retailers, e-commerce sites and social-media communities.
The available counts show a substantial visible market, not a measured global total. A multilingual survey in 2017 found at least 520 species from 95 genera offered by 109 online sellers. A separate study recorded 58,937 colonies representing 209 species sold by 206 sellers in 89 Chinese cities during six months in 2021. Another study found 631 species offered by online stores; its accompanying Instagram analysis covered about 38,000 public posts from about 6,300 users between 2010 and 2020.
Those figures cannot be added together. They cover different years, countries, platforms and units: species and sellers in one case, colonies in another, and online references to pets in the Instagram data. They do not establish current annual sales, revenue or a worldwide growth rate. They do establish that online supply is extensive and geographically connected.
The market can favor ants that are good at spreading
In the 2017 seller dataset, 57 of the 520 traded species were classified as invasive, and invasive species were offered by 1.7 times as many sellers as non-invasive species. Species with larger geographic ranges and more generalist habitat requirements also tended to have greater commercial success. In the online-store study, 68 of 631 species were classified as invasive and were offered by 1.73 times more sellers than other species.
This is a market-selection relationship, not evidence that buyers or sellers deliberately seek invasive ants. Species that are widespread, adaptable and relatively easy to keep may be easier to find and more commercially successful. Some of those same traits can help a species survive outside its native range.
Establishment still requires more than a shipment. A colony must survive transport, reach a suitable environment, reproduce and, in many cases, arrive repeatedly. This process is often described as propagule pressure: the chance of establishment rises when more viable organisms, or more repeated introductions, reach places where they can survive.
A 2023 study of Chinese online sales found that 56 of the 209 recorded species were non-native to China. Its climate model found conditions potentially suitable for 24.7% of modeled non-native species-seller-city combinations, with the Greater Bay Area emerging as the strongest overlap between sales volume and subtropical conditions. That percentage is a forecast of climatic suitability, not an establishment rate. The study did not show that the online trade caused existing introductions of those ants.
Kenya exposes a different risk: where the colonies come from
Destination biosecurity is only half the problem. Before a colony reaches a buyer, it may have been collected from a wild nest.
In Kenya, two 2025 cases involved approximately 5,000 ants in one incident and approximately 400 in another. The ants included Messor cephalotes, an East African giant harvester ant, and were reportedly intended for overseas exotic-pet markets. Four defendants later pleaded guilty. Reuters reported that each was ordered to pay a fine of about US$7,700 or serve 12 months in prison.
Kenya prohibits wildlife exports without the relevant authorization, and the cases were prosecuted under national wildlife-trafficking law. They demonstrate wild collection and attempted international export. They do not establish the total scale of Kenyan extraction, the proportion of the trade that is wild-caught, sustainable-harvest failure, population decline in Messor cephalotes or the size of the global market. The enforcement account comes mainly from secondary reporting; the underlying seizure inventory and court judgment were not available in the consulted evidence.
The two risks therefore point in different directions. Source-country controls ask whether a colony was legally collected and whether its origin can be documented. Destination rules ask whether the species can be imported, contained and kept without establishing in the wild.
The existing cost of invasive ants is not a bill from the pet trade
Invasive ants already cause substantial damage. A synthesis covering 12 invasive species in 27 countries reported US$51.93 billion in costs, of which US$10.95 billion were incurred and US$40.98 billion were potential, expected or predicted costs. More than 80% of the reported total was associated with two species — Solenopsis invicta and Wasmannia auropunctata — and with the United States and Australia. The dataset had no cost reports for an average of 78% of invaded countries, so it is geographically and taxonomically incomplete.
Those figures describe established invasive ants across decades. They do not show that hobbyist sales caused any named invasion, and they cannot be used as a forecast of losses from the online pet market. In Europe, available reporting indicates that plant imports may account for more ant introductions than the pet trade. Cargo, soil, shipping and other commodity movements remain competing pathways.
What regulation could and could not solve
No ant species is currently listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES, according to the consulted sources. CITES regulates trade in species placed on its appendices; its absence does not make a shipment legal. National wildlife, quarantine and invasive-species rules can still prohibit collection, import, sale or release. UK guidance, for example, says controls on non-native pet invertebrates vary by species, origin and purpose and may involve import licensing, plant-health rules, CITES and invasive-species law.
A 2025 commentary in Oryx proposed reviewing traded ant species, prioritising invasive or threatened species, considering CITES Appendix II listing and improving identification tools and enforcement training. That proposal has not become international law. Documentation would improve visibility only if officials could reliably identify species and distinguish captive-bred provenance from wild collection. The consulted sources do not show that an ant-specific system independently verifies a queen’s species, origin, breeder records and chain of custody.
The policy argument is consequently narrower than “ban ants” versus “do nothing.” Targeted screening, restrictions on species with strong evidence of invasion risk, permits, traceability and better identification could focus enforcement on the highest-risk introductions and illegal extraction. Public listings could also provide early warnings about sellers, species and routes.
The counterargument is serious. Risk varies sharply among species, and a broad restriction could impose costs on legal keepers and small breeders without proving that demand would disappear. Misidentification, weak enforcement or migration to private groups and encrypted channels could make the trade less visible. Responsible-keeping guidance already stresses checking local law, preventing escapes, planning for long-term care and never releasing captive or non-local ants, although no single practitioner source can represent the entire hobby.
The evidence supports better measurement and targeted controls, not a claim that the online pet trade is already the main driver of invasive-ant damage. Its scale, the provenance of many colonies and the routes by which ants become established remain the unresolved parts of the story.
